Joanne Ma will be serving her first year in Spartanburg Five School District as the Instrumental Music Teacher at Duncan Elementary School of the Arts.
Mrs. Ma is a graduate of Furman University in Greenville, SC, receiving her Bachelors Degree in Music Education. As a student at Furman, Mrs. Ma studied percussion under Dr. John Beckford and Dr. Omar Carmenates. She performed with many ensembles, including the Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Symphony Orchestra, and Percussion Ensemble. She was a member of Furman’s marching band, the Paladin Regiment, where she held section leader and undergraduate staff positions. She was also selected by the music faculty at Furman University to perform in the Fall Honors Recital in her senior year.
Prior to her arrival in Duncan, Mrs. Ma served as the Associate Director of Bands and Percussion Director at Sumter High School in Sumter, SC, from 2013-2018. During that time, Mrs. Ma conducted multiple bands and extracurricular ensembles. Under Mrs. Ma’s direction, the band program received many Superior Ratings at SCBDA events, as well as the Outstanding Performance Award from 2014-17. The Indoor Percussion program, led by Mrs. Ma, earned high rankings at CIPA and CWEA Championships.
Outside of teaching, Mrs. Ma also performed in many competitive ensembles, including Palmetto Percussion and Carolina Gold Drum and Bugle Corps in the DCA circuit. Mrs. Ma also enjoys performing with Furman’s Lakeside Concert Band in the summer.
Mrs. Ma is an active member of South Carolina Band Directors Association, South Carolina Music Educators Association, National Association for Music Educators, and Percussive Arts Society. She is endorsed as a Percussion Educator with Innovative Percussion.
Mrs. Ma is very excited to return home to the Greenville-Spartanburg area with her husband, Tony, where her family has resided since her childhood. She cannot wait to begin the 2018-19 school year!
