Band Director

Liam Montiel is one of the Band Directors at Beech Springs Middle School.  He is a graduate of the University of South Carolina where he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education. As an undergraduate, Mr. Montiel studied Bassoon under Dr. Michael Harley and performed as a member of the USC University Band, Symphonic Band, and Wind Ensemble. He also marched for USC’s “Mighty Sound of the Southeast” Marching Band as a baritone.


Before coming to Spartanburg School District 5, Mr. Montiel began his teaching career as the Interim Director of Bands at Westwood High School in 2018. The following year, Mr. Montiel continued his teaching career at Spartanburg School District 5, where he taught at both Berry Shoals Intermediate School and Beech Springs Intermediate School as a band director. Prior to becoming one of the band directors at Beech Springs Middle School, Mr.  Montiel was an Assistant Director of Bands at James F. Byrnes High School. He is currently in his sixth year of teaching at Spartanburg School District 5.


Mr. Montiel currently lives in Duncan, SC. When he is not teaching, Mr. Montiel enjoys making art, playing video games, and practicing his bassoon. He is currently a member of the Carolina Wind, a community band based in Lexington, SC.


Mr. Montiel teaches double reed (oboe / bassoon) students privately.
