In the James F. Byrnes band program, students are able to audition and participate in one of four performing ensembles – the Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Concert Band I & Concert Band II. All concert bands perform several local concerts throughout the school year. as well as performing at the SCBDA Concert Performance Assessment. The concert bands at James F. Byrnes has a long tradition of excellence and have received numerous Superior-Ratings at the SCBDA Concert Performance Assessment.

The James F. Byrnes Marching Band, known as the “Rebel Regiment,” has two performing marching bands – a football marching band, and a competitive marching band. The Football marching band consists of 8th grade band students, students not in competition band, and competition marching band members. The football marching band performs at home and away football games, as well as local and national parades. The competitive marching band members are selected based on musical and marching abilities, and their desire to achieve a high degree of artistic excellence.  The competitive marching band competes in local, regional, and national competitive venues.

The Byrnes Winter Guard has three competitive groups, which consists of “Indigo”“Sapphire”, and “Topaz.” All three guards are members of the Carolina Winter Ensemble Association (CWEA), and have performed and competed with groups from South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee. “Indigo” is Scholastic Open Class, “Sapphire” is Scholastic A Class, and “Topaz” is Scholastic AAA Class.
