Our symphonic bands are the cornerstone of the James F. Byrnes band program.
We offer five different symphonic and concert bands to our students. Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, and Ninth Grade Band are all open to students whether they participate in marching band or not. Our symphonic bands have earned consistent superior ratings at state and regional events.
Wind Ensemble – Listed as Symphonic Band Honors in the registration book, this is the premier ensemble of the entire band program. We perform grade 5-6 music including Masterworks. We perform everything from orchestral transcriptions to original works for concert band. This group usually has 60-65 members.
Symphonic Band – This group is made up of 10th-12th graders and performs grade 3-4 music. This group performs two concerts and select members are invited to perform with the Wind Ensemble on occasion. This group has grown tremendously in recent years. Students in this group earn fine arts elective credit towards graduation. This ensemble usually has 40-50 members.
Concert Band – Concert band is a first semester ensemble that is primarily designed for non-marching band members. This allows non-marchers an opportunity to keep performing during the fall semester. This group performs grade 3-5 music and is usually comprised of 50-60 students. Many students from this group have qualified for all-state and region band.
Ninth Grade Symphonic Band – This ensemble is designed for our ninth grade band members. This band performs grade 3-4 music and performs two concerts. This ensemble also participates in state events such as all-state, concert performance assessment, and solo and ensemble. Students in this ensemble get brought over to the main high school campus by the school district. This group usually has 80-90 members.
